At the time of this writing, in New Mexico acupuncturists have significant latitude in their practice of acupuncture. Upon licensee they are granted the title of Doctor of Oriental Medicine. By contrast, the states of Idaho and Wyoming have no acupuncture provisions; practicing acupuncture is neither legal nor illegal. In Arizona, one can self-administer acupuncture without a license.
Since state licensing procedures vary greatly, it is best to check local regulations by contacting the department of public health in your state government, so that you understand whether it is legal to self-administer acupuncture to family members. (Acupressure, which is discussed later in this chapter, can be an effective alternative to acupuncture, and does not typically require a license.)
In the West, moxibustion is not as widely known as acupuncture and acupressure. In general, the effects of moxibustion can be long-term and stable, when practiced consistently. Also, it is very easy to use. Thus it is particularly valuable for preventive care and health maintenance.
