Antioxidant in strawberries shown to support metabolic function

June 29th, 2011 — 8:03am

It is well known that eating an apple a day is supposed to keep a person healthy, but new research suggests that strawberries may be a better option. Scientists at the Salk Institute found that this fruit contains high levels of a nutrient that may support strong metabolic health.

The team tested the effects of the antioxidant fisetin in a group of laboratory mice that were bred to exhibit symptoms of diabetes. While mice fed a fisetin-rich diet still developed diabetes, they were less likely to experience complications of the disorder, which include kidney disease, retinopathy and neuropathy.

"This manuscript describes for the first time a drug that prevents both kidney and brain complications in a type 1 diabetes mouse model," said David Schubert, who led the study.

The findings also support Ilchi Lee's belief that health is a matter of taking responsibility for one's own well-being and taking steps to live a healthy lifestyle. A diet rich in strawberries may help support healthy metabolic function and limit an individual's risk of developing painful and potentially life-threatening health conditions.

Drexel announces new online brain education program

June 24th, 2011 — 9:23am

Many people who want to study Ilchi Lee's teachings of health want to go on and help others achieve the highest quality of life possible. While Ilchi Lee's message can help provide a better understanding, it is also a good idea for people to enroll in higher education programs in order to become better qualified.

Drexel University Online announced that it will be offering a new virtual master of science in nursing (MSN) program that focuses on pediatric primary care nurse practitioners. This could be a great opportunity for people who are looking to get into this field.

As many people who have dreams of the healthcare industry are already employed, some may choose to go back to school in an online format because it offers them a more flexible schedule in between academics and the professional setting.

"We're very proud to offer our students the outstanding Drexel curriculum within this convenient online format," said Kenneth Hartman, academic director for Drexel University Online. "All of our online programs, including our MSN pediatric primary care nurse practitioner program, are taught by the same world-renowned faculty as our on-campus courses."

Get in touch with the earth at one of the Great Lakes

June 22nd, 2011 — 8:10am

Ilchi Lee reminds us that reconnecting with the earth will bring us hope. As part of his Earth Citizen Movement, Ilchi Lee asks us to be citizen and steward of this planet and take care of it and its inhabitants. One may find that traveling to the Great Lakes in the Midwestern U.S. helps allow them to get in touch with the earth and connect with our beautiful planet.

The Great Lakes are an incredible feat of nature. From the shores of Lake Michigan, one is awed by the shear size of the body of water, which actually looks more like an ocean than anything else. Individuals may enjoy meditating on the shores of the lake, as it is very peaceful there.

Ilchi Lee believes that each of us has a personal responsibility to take care of the planet. At Lake Michigan, one could provide assistance to the earth by picking up any trash that they see on the beach. This may fill visitors with a feeling of importance and connection.

Smoking shown to increase a man’s prostate cancer risk

June 22nd, 2011 — 5:50am

It is well known that smoking increases a person's odds of developing many health conditions, but new information about the risks associated with the habit continue to emerge. For example, a recent study out of the Harvard School of Public Health showed that tobacco use significantly increases a man's chances of developing prostate cancer.

Author and philosopher Ilchi Lee says health is a matter of reviewing all of the information that is available and making the proper choices for one's self. This new study may help convince many people to give up this destructive habit.

After surveying the medical records of 5,366 men, the researchers found that smokers were 61 percent more likely to die from prostate cancer. Additionally, they were 61 percent more likely to experience a recurrence of the condition later in life.

"These data are exciting because there are few known ways for a man to reduce his risk of dying from prostate cancer," said Edward Giovannucci, who led the study. "For smokers, quitting can impact their risk of dying from prostate cancer. This is another reason to not smoke."

“Rocky” demonstrates power of focused training

June 21st, 2011 — 12:10pm

Ilchi Lee believes that health is one of the keys to a happy life, and perhaps no series of films better demonstrates this than the "Rocky" movies.

Perhaps one of the most inspirational films ever to grace the silver screen, Rocky tells the story of virtual nobody Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), a down-on-his-luck amateur boxer from the streets of Philadelphia. After stumbling into a title shot against world champ Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), Balboa trains himself into a physical condition that allows him to stand toe-to-toe with the champ in the ring.

The story is continued into the next Rocky movies, such as Rocky II, where the two adversaries square off again in a rematch. Rocky III and IV sees the "Italian Stallion" take on challenges from Clubber Lang (Mr. T) and Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren). Creed becomes Rocky's friend at this point and helps him with his training.

While the films tell a tremendous story beyond the boxing, they are perhaps most famous for their training montages. Set to classic tracks like "Eye of the Tiger," these brief parts of the film show Balboa engaging in some extreme workout regimens, such as doing situps while hanging upside down from the rafters of a barn.

If nothing else, Rocky and the numerous sequels definitely shows what's possible when a person sets their mind to a goal and gets serious about their health.

Hiking is a fun activity that can promote relaxation and health

June 17th, 2011 — 1:28am

Ilchi Lee reminds us that it is important to take good care of both our minds and bodies. One's health may be his most important possession, and regular exercise is something that helps keep an individual healthy. Hiking is an activity that may help one find peace and balance in addition to having positive physical effects.

According to The Spectrum, a Utah-based news source, Jenny's Canyon in the state's Snow Canyon State Park is a beautiful and relaxing hike. The trail is relatively flat, though it does include a short vertical climb, and should be suitable for most reasonably athletic individuals. The scenic views provided by the hike are sure to encourage serene feelings due to their incredible beauty.

One may find that engaging in meditation along the gorgeous red rock and pink sand trails in Snow Canyon State Park increases the feelings of well-being that one will achieve through their hike. Practicing moving meditation while visiting the area may be beneficial as well, as it combines physical motion with mental energy. This may help one establish mind-body-spirit harmony.

Keep personal distractions away from the office

June 14th, 2011 — 8:47am

Few people would say that their work is the most important aspect of their lives, but it is undoubtedly near the top.

With this in mind, it is critical to understand when it is appropriate to separate one's work life from personal situations, and this can become particularly true during important sporting events.

While many people in the office undoubtedly watched last night's game and want to spend hours upon hours breaking it down, employees need to remember to remain focused throughout the day and maximize one's brain potential, saving the majority of the analysis for after the work day. This is particularly crucial as Ilchi Lee believes maximizing this potential can help a person become a more balanced and well-rounded individual.

Additionally, while it can be tempting to sneak away from the office a little early in order to catch games in their entirety, working a full day should be one's priority, as slacking off can have negative consequences for both the employee and the company.

Often, workers can use the lure of upcoming sporting events to focus a little extra on the day's work, making them get through what they need to accomplish and allowing them to concentrate on the big game.
